Tallow:
The Natural Choice for Healthy Skin
Why Tallow?
Tallow has been used for centuries in traditional skincare remedies, largely thanks to its rich profile of vitamins A, D, E, and K. While it’s also great for cooking, here at The Ozzbarn Farm, we focus exclusively on harnessing tallow’s skin-loving benefits. If you’re looking for a natural, toxin-free way to nourish your skin, you’ve come to the right place!
Our Skincare Philosophy
Traditional Methods
We render our tallow using time-honored techniques that help preserve its beneficial nutrients. Each batch is handled with care, ensuring a final product that is both pure and potent.
Wholesome Ingredients
We never use synthetic fillers or harsh chemicals—only pure tallow and any carefully chosen oils or botanicals we might add or infuse. This commitment to clean formulations helps keep your skincare routine simple yet effective.
Family-Focused
As a family-operation, we craft each product as if we’re making it for our own loved ones. That means every balm, cream, or salve we produce is held to the highest standards of quality and safety.
Benefits of Tallow for Skin
Deep Moisturization
Tallow closely mimics the natural oils in human skin, making it exceptionally nourishing for all skin types. It absorbs readily, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.
Vitamin-Rich
Loaded with essential vitamins (A, D, E, and K), tallow helps support a healthy, glowing complexion. These vitamins also assist with skin repair and rejuvenation over time.
Gentle & Soothing
Because it’s free of irritating additives, tallow is perfect for those with sensitive or easily irritated skin. It calms and hydrates without the need for synthetic ingredients.
Barrier Support
A thin layer of tallow on the skin helps lock in moisture while defending against environmental stressors. This protective barrier can be especially beneficial in harsh or dry climates.
Some of our most commonly used ingredients:
While each product has its own recipe with carefully sourced ingredients for maximum benefits, here is a quick glimpse at some of our most commonly used ingredients.
Cold Pressed Castor Oil
Cold-pressed castor oil is prized for its deeply hydrating properties, largely due to its high content of ricinoleic acid. This unique fatty acid helps form a protective barrier on the skin, sealing in moisture for long-lasting softness. Castor oil also works as a mild cleansing agent, lifting away impurities without stripping the skin. Its soothing nature makes it a great option for sensitive or easily irritated skin. When blended with other nourishing oils, it can enhance their absorption and overall effectiveness. Its thicker consistency means a little goes a long way, providing a luxurious feel in every application.
Jojoba Oil
Often called nature’s “liquid gold,” jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax ester that closely resembles human sebum. This resemblance allows it to penetrate the skin quickly without leaving a greasy residue. It helps balance out both oily and dry skin types by regulating natural oil production. Rich in vitamins E and B, jojoba oil supports the skin’s repair processes and maintains elasticity. Its non-comedogenic nature means it won’t clog pores, contributing to a clearer complexion. Thanks to its stability, jojoba oil also extends the shelf life of skincare formulations while leaving a silky finish on the skin.
Non Nano Zinc Oxide
Non-nano zinc oxide is a natural mineral that provides a physical barrier on the skin, reflecting harmful UV rays without being absorbed. This makes it a safer option than chemical sunscreens, minimizing the risk of hormonal disruption or irritation. Because the zinc particles are non-nano, they’re too large to penetrate the skin deeply, reducing potential health concerns. Zinc oxide also helps soothe inflammation, which is why it’s frequently used in diaper creams and other calming topical treatments. While older formulas sometimes left a heavy white cast, modern non-nano zinc products can offer effective coverage with minimal residue. When combined with nourishing oils and fats, non-nano zinc oxide becomes part of a gentle, broad-spectrum protective product.
Frankincense (EO)
Frankincense is an ancient essential oil revered for its calming scent and rejuvenating properties. It offers a warm, resinous fragrance that promotes relaxation and spiritual grounding in aromatherapy. When applied topically, frankincense is believed to help support an even skin tone and a smoother appearance. Its antioxidants may also combat free radicals, which can contribute to visible signs of aging. Many users find that frankincense promotes a sense of overall well-being, both mentally and physically. Combined with other nourishing oils, it adds a luxurious and uplifting touch to any skincare product.
Geranium (EO)
Geranium essential oil has a fresh, floral scent that can lift the spirit and soothe the mind. Known for its skin-balancing properties, it may help regulate sebum production, making it beneficial for both dry and oily skin. Some believe it also aids circulation, contributing to a naturally radiant glow. Its gentle nature helps calm irritation, while the pleasing aroma makes it a popular choice in perfumes and skincare blends. Geranium can be paired with carrier oils like tallow or jojoba to create a nourishing, rejuvenating formula. The result is a skincare experience that feels both luxurious and supportive to overall skin health.
Arnica Infusions
Arnica Infusions come from the bright yellow flowers of the Arnica montana plant, cherished for their time-tested soothing properties. When gently infused into oils, arnica can help alleviate minor aches and reduce the appearance of bruising or swelling, making it a popular addition to post-workout salves and soothing skincare products. Its natural anti-inflammatory compounds are ideal for relieving tension in tired muscles while supporting a calmer complexion. Because arnica is potent, we carefully balance it with other nourishing ingredients to ensure safety and prevent irritation for sensitive skin. The subtle, herbaceous aroma also blends well with essential oils, adding a calming botanical note to any formulation. By using arnica infusions, we aim to provide gentle, effective relief for everyday stressors and encourage a more comfortable, revitalized skin feel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't you infuse Magnesium into your Tallow?
While both tallow and magnesium offer great benefits, are we are obsessed with both, blending them requires combining a fat-based ingredient (tallow) with a water-based ingredient (magnesium oil). Without an emulsifier and a proper preservative system, this mixture can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria—something we want to avoid in our all-natural products. Rather than compromise on purity or add unnecessary chemicals, we prefer to keep our tallow formulations simple and safe. For those interested in magnesium’s benefits, we recommend our separate magnesium oil, which is carefully formulated to deliver mineral support without the need for additional preservatives. Both products can be used together, we just won't mix them together in one container. Some makers infuse their magnesium directly into the tallow for multiple weeks, skipping the water, and this is amazing. It's just not for us. The magnesium will never fully dissolve leaving a questionable amount of actual magnesium. We love our magnesium way too much for all that nonsense. Easier and more efficient, for us, to keep them separate.
Can you make one with Honey? Its Very "Trendy"
While honey can be wonderful ingredients for your skin, it is, again, water-based. Tallow, on the other hand, is strictly a fat-based ingredient. Mixing the two without a proper emulsifier and preservative system can turn your product into a breeding ground for microbes, forcing you to rely on synthetic additives to keep it safe. We prefer to maintain the simplicity and purity of our tallow skincare by avoiding such complexities. If you’d like to benefit from honey or aloe, we recommend seeking products specifically formulated to handle water-based ingredients in a stable, preservative-friendly environment. Any product you see with honey, either has a hidden ingredient they are not listing, or the maker is just unaware.
Do I need to refrigerate my product?
In most cases, our tallow-based products are stable at room temperature and don’t require refrigeration. Tallow itself is naturally resistant to oxidation, especially when rendered and stored properly, which is why we use amber glass jars. We also make our products in small batches to ensure they’re as fresh as possible when they reach you. However, if you live in a very warm or humid climate, storing them in a cool, dark place—like a pantry or cupboard—can help maintain quality. If you notice any change in color, scent, or texture, feel free to refrigerate.
